Description

Design and construction of a bridge and approach roadways to connect Afghanistan and Tajikistan. The incrementally launched, steel-concrete bridge was built over the Pyandzh River to connect Shir Khan on the Afghan side and Nizhniy Pyandzh on the Tajik side.

The construction works were performed on a very remote site on the edge of a war zone. Therefore, all processes were subject to extremely strict safety and security regulations, coordinated by the US Army.

One of the potential dangers were unexploded field mines. Another challenge was relocation and protection of utilities, including a transmission line.
